Your ALA department could win NVCAF artwork
The chance for ALA departments to own one-of-a-kind art is here again! An award-winning National Veterans Creative Arts Festival artist has graciously donated her artwork for the ALA Foundation’s special fundraising challenge. The department donating the most money to the ALA Foundation’s Veterans Creative Arts Festival fund, per capita by membership category through July 31, 2018, will be entered for a chance to win! The winning department will have the opportunity to display the work of art at their department headquarters, auction it off as a fundraiser, or use it in other creative ways to highlight the ALA’s mission. ALA National President Diane Duscheck will present the artwork to the winning department at the 2018 ALA National Convention in Minneapolis. Learn more here.

About the Artist and Artwork
U.S. Air Force Veteran Rebecca James of California won gold in the 2016 NVCAF Craft Coloring Kit division for her artwork better known as Steampunk Rhapsody. “You don’t have to be a Van Gogh to enjoy painting and drawing,” she said. “Getting involved in something creative is a great outlet for stress relief.”

72nd ALA Girls Nation to commence July 21
One hundred high school girls will soon be arriving in Washington, D.C. for the 72nd ALA Girls Nation held July 21-28! Every summer since 1947, two high school juniors from each ALA Girls State program are given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent their state as “senators” at ALA Girls Nation. The program is a profound learning experience designed to teach these young women, even before they are of voting age, about how the federal government operates. For seven days, the senators hold mock U.S. Senate sessions which require them to write, caucus, and debate bills; campaign for elected office; elect an ALA Girls Nation president and vice president; and work together to pass legislation. Follow all the action online here – you’ll find a recap of the day’s activities in the ALA Girls Nation Times, see updates from Twitter and Instagram, learn what bills senators bring to the floor, and find ALA social media to follow all of the events live!
